WHY DO ELEPHANTS HAVE BIG EARS ?
· Elephants are huge animals, which mean they produce a lot of body heat. Since they typically live in very hot climates, it’s essential that they have a very efficient way to get rid of their extra body heat. Their big, floppy ears provide them help.
· The inside of an elephant’s ear has tiny blood vessels. Skin of the ear is very thin, and blood vessels are very close to the surface.
· As the temperature of its blood is greater than the temperature of its surroundings, heat is released from the ears.
· In order to get rid of the heat, elephants flap their ears back and forth, and create a light breeze that can speed up the cooling process.
An elephant’s ear can cool its body by up to 5o Celsius (that’s 90 Fahrenheit)!
